Why did we choose Ecuador? and why this area?

  • 🔆Great climate and nature: The area offers a comfortable tropical climate with daytime temperatures between 24-32°C and nighttime temperatures between 15-20°C. There’s rain (rainforest) but there is also a fair amount of sunshine which is ideal for growing a wide range of tropical fruits. There are natural waterfalls and streams on (nearly) every property, there is sand by the river and clay up the hill with some areas that are rocky (near the streams), plants grow very quickly in the ecuatorial sun and the amount of rain to keep them satiated and thriving.
  • 🏡Safe from natural disasters: there are no hurricanes, no tsunamis, no active volcanoes near us and we are far from any fault lines (no major earthquakes for last 60+ years)
  • 🔒Low Crime Rate: Southeast Ecuador has very low violent crime, primarily limited to petty theft, making it a safe place to live.
  • 🙌Welcoming Local Culture: The local population is friendly toward foreigners, especially those who make an effort to learn Spanish. Foreigners can easily obtain residency and purchase land without significant legal hurdles.

  • 💵Affordable Land Prices: Land and the cost of living in this region is much cheaper compared to other parts of Ecuador and neighboring countries. Prices range from $500 to $5,000 per hectare, depending on location and other factors. For cost of living check the FAQ
  • 🚨Low Risk of Tropical Diseases: There is a low incidence of parasitic diseases like malaria and yellow fever. Mosquito-borne illnesses like chikungunya and dengue are rare due to the area’s low mosquito population.
  • 🌿High-Quality Soil: The soil in Southeast Ecuador is generally fertile and not heavily degraded by industrial farming. Some areas may have slightly acidic soil, but this can be easily corrected through permaculture methods.
  • 🏔️Diverse Elevation Options: The region offers a variety of elevation levels, from 760 meters to over 1,500 meters, allowing for a range of microclimates to suit different preferences.
  • ✈️Proximity to Major Airports: The area is relatively easy to access from the U.S. and Europe, with affordable flights and a reasonable travel distance from the nearest airport in Cuenca.
  • 👫Established Raw Vegan Communities: The region has growing raw vegan communities, providing access to rare fruit varieties and like-minded individuals.
  • 🍉Good Fruit Availability: Markets in the region offer a wide variety of high-quality tropical fruits, including bananas, papayas and avocados all year and many more seasonal fruits like mangoes, pineaples and watermelon as well as amazonian fruits like ice cream bean, acho, inaku, etc. and there is also a good selection of fresh greens like lettuce, celery, etc
